Joshua Light Show/Silver Apples (USA) in collaborazione con Bec Stupak - Musiche a cura di Nick Hallett The Joshua Light Show è il nome del grande show di expanded cinema improvvisato basato su un arsenale di effetti visivi - fra cui la mitica Liquid light - attivo presso Fillmore East a New York a cavallo tra gli anni ’60 e ’70. Animato da Joshua White, lo show è una performance ambientale che ha rappresentato un cardine della scena controculturale e di sperimentazione sull’espansione della percezione nordamericana, che ha accompagnato fra gli altri i live di Greateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Who e performance d’artista (Yaoi Kusama in particolare). Joshua Light Show ha letteralmente catapultato le esperienze percettive e gli immaginari pop di quegli anni in profondità cosmiche da cui molti non sono ancora tornati. White però sì, ed ha successivamente intrapreso una carriera come artista mixed-media e regista televisivo. Come le poche altre esperienze seminali di expanded cinema dell’epoca, del Joshua Light è stato possibile ricostruire recentemente qualche traccia grazie alla mostra The summer of Love. Psychedelic Art, Social Crisis and Counterculture in the 1960s, presentata presso la Tate Liverpool prima e il Whitney Museum di New York poi. Il Joshua Light è stato riproposto per la prima volta dal vivo nella primavera 2007 presso la Kitchen di New York con una sonorizzazione a cura degli artisti/musicisti Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom. A Netmage 08 la parte musicale è stata affidata - in un certo senso filologicamente – a Silver Apples. Silver Apples è il duo di musica psichedelica-elettronica attivo a New York fra 1967 e 1969 formato da Simeon Coxe III e dal drummer Danny Taylor. Silver Apples è stata una delle prime band ad usare estesamente le tecniche della musica elettronica insieme agli idiomi del rock facendo ricorso ad un arsenale di oscillatori, controller, pedali e sintethyzer autocostruiti o rettificati. Con i suoi beat pulsanti e le sue modalità frequentemente discordanti, ha anticipato non solo certa musica elettronica sperimentale (ed il krautrock) degli anni ’70, ma anche parte della musica dance underground e indie rock dei ‘90. I Silver Apples si sono riformati con un nuovo team per un breve periodo nella seconda metà degli anni ’90, ma un incidente ne ha fermato l’attività. The show, animated by Joshua White, is an environmental performance which represented a turning point for the countercultural scene and in the experimental expansion of the Northamerican perception, which accompained among others the live of Greateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Who and artists' performance (Yaoi Kusama in particular). Joshua Light Show has catapulted perceptive experiences and pop imaginary of those years into cosmic deep ends from which many have not yet returned. White did, he subsequetely started a career as a mixed-media artist and as a Tv director. Like the other seminal experiences of the time's expanded cinema, only recently it has been possible to reconstruct some traces of the Joshua Light with the exhibition The summer of love. Psychedelic Art, Social Crisis and Counterculture in the 1960s, presented at Tate Liverpool and then at Whitney Museum in New York. Joshua Light was restaged live for the first time in the spring 2007at Kitchen in New York, the sound part was curated by the artists/ musicans Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom. For Netmage 08 the music part will be in the hands of Silver Apples. Silver Apples is a duo of psycho-electro music based in New York between 1967 and 1969, and formed by Simeon Coxe III and the drummer Danny Taylor. Silver Apples was one of the first bands to use extensively the techniques of electro music together with rocks idioms employing modified or even DIY oscillators, controllers, pedals, synthesizers and keyboards. With his pulsating beats and his frequentely dissonating modalities, anticipated not only a certain experimental electronic music (and krautrock) of the ’70s, but also a part of underground dance music and indie rock of the ‘90s. Silver Apples shaped as a new team for a short period in the second half of the ’90s but an accident stopped their activity. Silver Apples' live at Netmage 08 - conducted by Simeon Coxe III after the parting of Danny Taylor in 2005 , who is recovering after an accident in the Gulf of Mexico as a skipper, but who is still active as a musician - is the first one in Europe since then. |
